However, as I have friends and family in the field of massage therapy, I’ve noticed it’s relatively under served.
This is my purpose for writing today.
I want to translate all the business, marketing, brand building and online monetization hacks available into a user-friendly format, specific for the massage therapy industry.
And the best part is 95% of the methods discussed here don’t cost a dime – just your time and willingness to learn and accept new business paradigms.

1. Create A Website Or YouTube Channel Or Use A Hosting Platform
Having a website with your own domain is your digital storefront. It’s internet real estate and an invaluable asset regardless of your vertical, size, clientele or objectives.
Similarly, starting a YouTube channel allows you to build an engaged following by putting out high-quality content that’s value-adding to your target audience.
So if you think you’d prefer a video based content strategy, using YouTube could be a great starting place.
But if you’d like to focus on writing posts, having a website with a blog could be a better choice.
Actually, utilizing both of these channels could be a synergistic approach that amplifies your results even more!
Finally, if you don’t want to use a personal website or YouTube, you could even start by posting articles on to LinkedIn and Medium.
*Note: If you have a personal blog, you can re-post your articles on LinkedIn and Medium and they will not be viewed as duplicate content. This means you’ll have your content in various places, increasing your traffic potential.
Actually, much of the following advice hinges on having a website and/or somewhere to host content.
So although you can (and many do) succeed by just using Instagram or a similar social media platform, you’ll be substantially limiting your growth and scalability.
Owning a personal website is especially beneficial for creating evergreen content and building brand.
The good news about creating a website is it can be done quickly and easily nowadays.
In fact, you don’t any technical skills, design experience or coding knowledge to get a professional business website up and running.

Ultimately, the platform you choose will not matter nearly as much as the content and value you’re adding as well as your consistency and promotional strategy.
But explore the options above and test them out for free before committing!

2. Create Content & A Content Strategy
Creating content is something that every business needs to be investing time in.
People spend an increasingly massive amount on time online, consuming an enormous amount of content through blogs, vlogs and social media.
This is an incredible opportunity for brands, businesses and entrepreneurs to capture potential buyers with engaging, interesting, valuable or entertaining information.
We have various platforms to broadcast our message and provide value for people.
Ultimately, creating content is all about creating value for your target audience.
It’s answering common questions and providing actionable solutions to common problems in the form of articles, videos or social media posts.
And here’s the thing, if you can command attention (whether through social media, a blog or video), you can convert that attention into conversions and sustainable, scalable income.
So let’s dive in to that strategy some more!
First things first, you want to decide on a specific content strategy (or two) that fits your preferences, brand and objectives.
For example, are you naturally comfortable in front of a camera? Then maybe creating YouTube content is best.
Or perhaps you enjoy writing and can express your thoughts and ideas concisely in this way. If so, then a blog is a must for your massage therapy business.
Or maybe you love creating interactive, engaging short-form content. In this case, then taking advantage of social media could be the best option.
Again, you can choose to focus on more than one item, however I would choose one platform and content strategy as your core focus.
For example, if you decide to start making 10-15 minute long YouTube videos teaching long-distance runners how to relieve shin splints at home, you can chop that material into smaller pieces and share it on Instagram or TikTok.
In fact, using social media for brand building is incredibly powerful and I’ve included this as a whole section below!
Ultimately, you should choose something that you’re comfortable with and something that you know you can create a lot of content for (i.e., not just one video or one post and done).
This is because you should consistently create high-quality, value-adding content – at least once a week (although I recommend twice).
Once you start getting traction and increased revenue from these efforts, you can outsource your writing or content creation to save time down the road, but in the beginning it’s a great idea to just focus on building a large collection of content assets as a foundation.
Once you’ve decided on your content style, you want to also keep in mind that your content can be either educational, entertaining or inspiring (or some combination of these).
For example, sharing before and after stories of clients you’ve helped is inspiring while teaching stay at home moms how to avoid back muscle issues from picking up their children is educational.
And this brings me to my last point. Go niche.
Notice how I focused on a specific segment of a potential target audience.
That is, stay-at-home moms with young children who want to take care of their muscles and overall health.
When marketing and creating content, it’s important to niche down. This is important for a couple reasons.
First, the competition for broad terms in Google ranking is very difficult (for example, ranking for a competitive general term like what is massage therapy is difficult).

Second, from a marketing perspective, if you try to target everyone, you target no one.
Customization and personalization of the online experience is more important than ever, so stay niche and understand your target audience deeply.
This way you can create high-value content specifically catered to their unique needs, interests and problems.
3. Build Brand Using Social Media
The other side of the content coin in brand building. When you create content and customize the platform you’re using to host that content, you want to be thinking about your brand.
What is your message and what are goals? Who is your audience and what values do they have that your brand recognizes?
What colors, fonts, personality and general vibe does your content and social media portray?
How recognizable is your logo? What is the tone within your content – Light? Serious? Comedic?
All of these things help to build and solidify a brand.
And building a brand is one of the most underrated assets that you can invest in as a small business.
There’s overwhelming competition and alternatives for people to choose, so what’s the differentiating factor?
Well namely, your ability to create and establish a unique, easily recognizable brand identity. And using social media channels is an amazingly effective way to create this seemingly intangible asset.
Consistently posting, engaging with and growing your audience online requires consistency and patience, but it’s a strategy that you should not ignore.
Just remember that creating brand isn’t selling services.
You should focus on adding value, engaging with people and building a relationship with trust and authority.
Selling and profit are the result of a good content strategy and brand building paradigm.
So let’s talk about these monetization ideas.
4. Set Up Initial Monetization Channels
Having a library of helpful content and an engaged following translates to numerous money-making opportunities.
People prefer to buy products and services from people and brands that they trust and know.
This is why it’s so difficult to sell offers to cold traffic.
Although there are exceptions to this rule, but unless you’re offering something of high perceived value for free (or heavily discounted), selling your product or service to someone who’s never heard of you is unlikely.
This is another valuable piece of creating content.
Another way to warm people up (more quickly) is through retargeting ads. I’ll discuss this topic in more detail in the Digital Marketing section below.
But for now, let’s talk about some initial monetization channels you can set up within your website.
Working remotely as a massage therapists may have its obstacles, but never underestimate the knowledge you have how you can help people with their pain relief in other ways besides hands-on massage techniques.
Taking your existing knowledge and expertise, turning it into value and discovering new ways to communicate that information will naturally lead to some site visitors and prospects wanting more information. This also opens up the possibility for reaching a global audience.
To add this monetization channel, you can simply embed your service offer casually throughout your posts and have a “Work With Me” or “Consult With Me” tab in your main menu.
Of course, consulting can be a great way to boost your income as a massage therapist, but there are two other strategies that are more hands-off and passive in nature: print-on-demand and affiliate marketing.
Print-on-demand is a business model where you upload a design onto a particular product (such as a t-shirt, bag or mug) and a third-party distributor (such as Amazon, Teespring or Printful) will print and ship that item each time a customer buys it.
This means that everything from inventory, printing, shipping and customer service and returns are all handled by the print-on-demand company – not you.
The only thing you need to do is upload your own designs onto different product and market those designs to your audience. Then the company just takes a cut of each sale (to cover the costs of making the shirt) and you get to keep the rest.
This is truly a passive income source because once you’ve created and uploaded your designs (which can be as simple as text on a t-shirt; for example “Trust Me, I’m A Massage Therapist”) and created a listing for a particular product, you’re essentially finished (besides your own marketing efforts).
You can then enjoy recurring revenue each time that products sells.
You just want to match your designs with your target audience and be sure that they resonate with their interests, demographics and values.
While some entrepreneurs have whole businesses using just print-on-demand, for our purposes, I’m recommending simply combining this business model (which is free to use) within your content strategy, brand building efforts and website creation.
For example, similar to having a “Work With Me” page on your website, you can simply add a “Store” or “Shop” page as well with pictures of your products that link to your external store (for example, a free Teespring storefront with trendy Massage Therapy shirts).

The last profit channel for this section is one of my personal favorites. It’s perhaps one of the most passive and easiest ways to monetize a website and its content.
It’s called affiliate marketing.
Essentially, affiliate marketing is promoting and selling the products and services of other companies for a commission. Amazon’s affiliate program has commission rates ranging from 1% to 10% while many software or digital course products may offer rates as high as 50% or more.
You can easily find affiliate programs by either searching for a specific company + “affiliate program” via Google or using an affiliate network such as ShareASale, which is essentially an organized marketplace of various affiliate programs you can search for and join.
Either way, combining this monetization channel with value-adding content is a passive income strategy that will yield results over the long-term.
5. Be Consistent, Patient & Strategic
None of the ideas or monetization channels above will be successful if you’re not consistent, patient and strategic.
Let’s start with being strategic. What exactly does that entail?
A strategic approach means you’re creating consistent, high quality, value-adding content. It means you’re building an email list by offering a free lead magnet for visitors to your site.
It’s listening to your audience’s concerns, questions and pain points and providing answers and solutions to those problems.
It’s formatting your posts and websites in a way that’s optimized for Google (using SEO best practices) as well as the end user and the mobile experience. It’s researching, testing and being consistent and patient.
For example, ranking on Google can take (on average) up to 35 weeks or more depending on your target keywords, niche and competition (Income School, 2019).
But just remember that if you’re adding real value to people – consistently – you will win.
So don’t focus on how you can make money quick, instead focus on how you can genuinely add value to and engage with your audience – in this way, making sales will have far less friction.
6. Make A Digital Product
I’ve put this step towards the end because I believe it’s critical to first develop your audience and focus on creating other valuable content.
This way you can not only learn what resonates with your audience most but also build and establish trust and authority.
This way you can sell your products more easily (since people will trust you) and cheaper (for example, by using an email list you’ve built up and have been engaging with regularly).
Having a digital product is a popular addition for an online business nowadays. And for good reason.
It’s essentially an evergreen asset that will continue to earn you revenue well after you create it.
Much like high-quality blog content, it’s truly passive income at its finest.
You can package a digital product in a variety of formats.
For example, creating a digital mini course is a great digital product idea.
You can then host the mini course using a platform such as Udemy or Teachable or within a membership page within your own website.
You can promote it directly to your existing audience, on your website or even through Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform to reach millions of potential buyers.
And before you dismiss writing an eBook, keep in mind that it does not need to be super long or overly complex.
You can simply write a 10-page document (providing real value for people), convert it into a PDF and add some designs or illustration to make it pop (you could even hire this portion of the job out to Fiverr for cheap) and then sell it at an enticing price.
You could even bundle products together and promote package offers.
Either way, a digital product is a fantastic way to start making extra money as a massage therapist.
7. Digital Marketing
This last portion is more of a bonus section that can help with scaling your overall business (if you implement digital marketing tactics correctly).
For the purposes of this post, there are 3 main marketing topics I want to explore:

The Sales Funnel, Targeting & Your Offer
All customers go through a buyer’s journey before making a purchase with a particular brand or service (except for things like daily necessities or impulse purchases).
And this idea is not a new concept – it’s just all digital now.
But as a business owner, understanding the sales funnel concept and how it relates to your product/service offers and your target audience is essential to successfully market your business online.
Let’s illustrate the sales funnel model with an example.
Imagine you want to target women aged 25-38 living within a 25-mile radius of you who do CrossFit and also like relaxation, healthy living and alternative wellness.
While this degree of targeting is easily done by creating a saved audience and running Facebook or Instagram ads, it’s also important you understand that your audience here would be interest-based and cold.
That is, they’ve never heard of you before and are therefore far less likely to trust you or make a purchase after this first point of contact.
These people sit at the top of your funnel.
And this is why retargeting is essential for successful marketing. But I’ll talk more about retargeting below.
For now, let’s move further down the sales funnel.
In the middle of the funnel, you have your warmed up audience. These are people that have heard of you and have engaged with your brand (or posts) in some way before.
These could be people that visited your website or engaged with a previous ad, such as watching part of a video or liking a post of yours.
Finally, at the bottom of the funnel, you have your hot traffic and existing customers. These are the people that will convert at the highest rate and will give you the highest ROI in marketing campaigns.
The goals of digital marketing is to nurture your audience and move them further down the sales funnel and close to a purchase.
For this reason, you want to be aware of the stage your target audience is on when building an ad campaign.
If they’re at the top of the funnel, they’re unlikely to make a purchase, so keep your offer simple, free and focused on brand awareness and giving value.
As you move down the funnel and start making retargeting campaigns, this is generally when you can start making more sales and conversions.
So let’s talk a little more about retargeting!

Retargeting is generally where the bulk of conversions and sales will come from. This is why it’s essential that you build these types of campaigns if you’re exploring a digital marketing strategy.
We can retarget customers in a variety of different ways. Here are some common retargeting options:
- Website Visitors
- This is why it’s important that you start tracking visitors and collecting data by installing the Facebook Pixel onto your website

- People Who Have Engaged With A Previous Ad Or Post
- People Who Have Watched A Certain Percentage Of A Video Ad You Created
- This is video view retargeting and is a high-converting campaign strategy!
- Your Email List
- You can upload your email list and create a custom audience targeting these people with Facebook or Instagram ads
- People Who Visited A Landing Page But Not A Thank You Page
- This would mean someone clicked on your ad, landing on the following page but never took any action (Such as putting in their email)
- People Who Never Completed A Purchase
So as you can see, these customer archetypes will tend to be your warmest traffic, meaning they will convert at a much higher rate when marketing to them (whether through paid ads or other channels, such as email marketing).
